Overview

BDR and SDR are used interchangeably in a lot of UK job ads, but where organisations separate them, the BDR owns net-new outbound into cold markets while the SDR handles inbound and structured sequencing. If you like starting from nothing and building a territory, this is your seat.

01

What a BDR does

Identify and open new markets, accounts and partnership channels. Cold outreach at the top of the funnel, early-stage qualification, and often the first discovery conversation before handing to a closer or AE.

It is the most entrepreneurial of the pipeline roles. You are frequently working without warm demand. That is harder, and it is exactly why it builds durable skill.

02

BDR versus SDR

Where a business splits the two: SDRs work inbound and existing sequences; BDRs work net-new outbound and partnerships. BDR roles tend to carry more autonomy over targeting and messaging.

In practice, plenty of UK employers use one title for both. Read the responsibilities in the advert rather than the job title.

03

What the HTCA pathway will cover

Not built yet, but the syllabus is set: territory and market mapping, cold outbound at volume without sounding automated, partnership and channel outreach, early discovery, handover quality, and the metrics that keep a BDR employed.

Live practice and a scored assessment, in line with every other HTCA pathway.

04

Where to start today

Cold outbound rewards people who are comfortable being told no and staying warm anyway. The flagship closing programme drills exactly that composure, and the free training covers the fundamentals at no cost.

HTCA does the teaching and certifying. PrimeClosers does the introducing to UK employers who need people who can open cold ground. Two specialists, one route from beginner to hired.

Day to day

What the role actually involves

  • Own a named territory or vertical and build it from cold.
  • Run senior-level outbound into directors and above.
  • Develop channel and partner conversations alongside direct prospecting.
  • Attend industry events and convert conversations into pipeline.
  • Map buying committees on complex, multi-stakeholder deals.
  • Work alongside marketing on account-based campaigns.
Capability

The skills that decide who gets hired

  • Executive-level conversation and credibility
  • Territory planning and account prioritisation
  • Multi-threading across a buying committee
  • Commercial storytelling rather than feature listing
  • Long-horizon persistence across six- to twelve-month cycles
  • Partner and channel relationship building
Fit

Who this seat suits, and who it does not

Ideal for
  • Experienced SDRs who want ownership rather than a sequence queue
  • People from consulting, recruitment or account management moving into new business
  • Self-directed operators who work well without daily supervision
Less suited to
  • Complete beginners. Most BDR seats expect some prior sales exposure
  • People who need fast feedback loops; BDR cycles are long
Progression

Where the role leads next

  1. 01BDROwning a territory and building pipeline from cold.
  2. 02Senior BDRStrategic accounts and partner-led motions.
  3. 03Account executive / new business managerCarrying a closing quota.
  4. 04Head of new businessOwning the whole acquisition function.
Demand

Industries hiring for this seat

  • Enterprise software and infrastructure
  • Manufacturing and industrial supply
  • Logistics and supply chain
  • Financial and legal services
  • Marketing and technology consultancies
Why employers value it
  • BDRs open markets a marketing team cannot reach with inbound alone.
  • Territory ownership creates compounding relationships that outlast any single campaign.
  • A BDR who can hold a conversation with a director shortens enterprise sales cycles measurably.
Training

How HTCA prepares you for this role

The flagship programme's work on framing, tonality and handling senior scepticism is the part of BDR work most people get wrong. The outbound mechanics are learnable in weeks; the composure is not.

A dedicated BDR curriculum covering territory planning, multi-threading and partner motions is planned as a senior extension of the SDR pathway.

Q&A

Common questions.

  • Often, yes. Plenty of UK employers use the titles interchangeably. Where they are separated, BDRs own net-new outbound and partnerships while SDRs handle inbound and structured sequences.

  • Most UK BDR roles pay a base salary plus variable on pipeline created or meetings booked. Total package is usually comparable to SDR, with more upside where partnerships are involved.

  • It is a good first job if you are self-directed and resilient. It is harder than inbound-led work because you are creating demand rather than responding to it.

  • There isn't one yet for the dedicated BDR curriculum. What is available now is the senior-conversation training inside the flagship programme, which happens to be the part most BDRs are missing.
