Pathway 03 / Specialist pathway

The SDR Pathway

Sales Development Representative: the structured, salaried B2B route into a professional sales career, and the standard ladder to account executive.

Specialist pathway

Generates and qualifies pipeline for B2B account executives through structured outbound sequencing and inbound follow-up. This page is the full UK career guide for the role: pay, responsibilities, skills, progression and who is hiring. Training for this seat currently runs through the flagship closing programme, and PrimeClosers places candidates into these roles today.

Typical base
£26,000–£35,000 base is the standard UK band
Commission
£8,000–£20,000 variable, usually paid on qualified meetings and pipeline created
Realistic OTE
£35,000–£55,000 OTE, top performers higher in enterprise SaaS
Remote outlook
Hybrid is still common in enterprise; fully remote SDR seats exist in SaaS and scale-ups.

Figures are observed UK market ranges, not a promise of earnings. Individual results vary with experience, offer, territory and effort.

Overview

An SDR generates qualified pipeline for account executives. Where a setter often works a warm inbound list for a coaching or agency offer, an SDR typically works structured outbound inside a B2B or SaaS organisation, with sequences, targets and a defined progression ladder above them.

01

What an SDR does

Research accounts, build target lists, run multi-touch outbound across email, phone and LinkedIn, qualify responses against a framework such as BANT or MEDDIC, and book discovery meetings for an account executive.

The rhythm is different from setting for a coaching offer. There are more stakeholders, longer cycles, and more emphasis on written outreach quality.

02

SDR pay and progression in the UK

UK SDR roles usually carry a real base salary plus variable tied to meetings booked and pipeline created. The seat is designed as a stepping stone: the standard ladder is SDR to senior SDR to account executive, often inside eighteen to twenty-four months.

For anyone who wants a conventional, structured sales career with a salary floor, SDR is a stronger starting point than commission-only setting.

03

What the HTCA pathway will cover

Still being written. It will cover ICP definition and account research, cold email that survives a busy inbox, cold calling openers and objection handling, multi-channel sequencing, qualification frameworks, CRM discipline, and the SDR-to-AE transition.

As with every HTCA pathway, assessment will be a live scored exercise rather than a certificate of attendance.

04

Where to start today

The SDR conversation and the closing conversation share a spine: qualify honestly, control the frame, handle resistance without flinching. The flagship programme teaches that spine, and it transfers directly.

Same loop as the flagship, just aimed at a different seat: HTCA trains and certifies, PrimeClosers puts you in front of UK employers who are actually hiring for pipeline roles.

Day to day

What the role actually involves

  • Build target account lists and research buying committees.
  • Run multi-touch sequences across email, phone and LinkedIn.
  • Qualify inbound demo requests against MEDDIC, BANT or a house framework.
  • Book and hand over discovery meetings to account executives.
  • Maintain pipeline hygiene in Salesforce or HubSpot.
  • Report on sequence performance and iterate messaging weekly.
Capability

The skills that decide who gets hired

  • Cold calling without a script crutch
  • Written outbound that earns a reply from a busy buyer
  • Account research and trigger-event spotting
  • Qualification frameworks and disqualification discipline
  • Sales engagement tooling: Outreach, Salesloft, Apollo
  • Metrics literacy: reply rate, meeting rate, pipeline created
Fit

Who this seat suits, and who it does not

Ideal for
  • Graduates and career changers targeting a structured B2B career
  • People who want a salaried base while learning sales
  • Anyone drawn to tech, SaaS and longer, more analytical sales cycles
Less suited to
  • People who want to close deals in month one: the SDR seat is deliberately upstream
  • Anyone allergic to activity metrics and CRM admin
Progression

Where the role leads next

  1. 01SDR12–18 months building pipeline and learning the ICP.
  2. 02Senior SDR / team leadCoaching new reps and owning sequence strategy.
  3. 03Account executiveOwning full-cycle deals and quota. The standard promotion.
  4. 04Enterprise AE or sales managerLarger accounts, or moving into leadership.
Demand

Industries hiring for this seat

  • B2B SaaS
  • Fintech and payments
  • Cybersecurity
  • Recruitment and staffing technology
  • Professional services and consultancies
Why employers value it
  • Pipeline coverage is the single number a VP of Sales is judged on, and SDRs create it.
  • A trained SDR shortens ramp time, which is the largest hidden cost in B2B sales hiring.
  • SDR seats are the internal talent pipeline for every AE hire that follows.
Training

How HTCA prepares you for this role

The discovery, qualification and objection-handling phases of the flagship programme transfer directly into the SDR seat. The difference is cycle length and committee size, not the underlying conversation.

A dedicated SDR curriculum covering sequencing, account research and MEDDIC-style qualification is planned. In the meantime, the interview preparation guide is the fastest route into an SDR assessment day.

Q&A

Common questions.

  • The function is similar. Both create qualified conversations. Context differs: SDRs usually sit in structured B2B or SaaS teams with a base salary and a defined ladder; setters more often work commission-heavy inside coaching, agency and info businesses.

  • No. Most UK SDR employers screen on written communication, resilience on the phone and coachability. Evidence of ability beats credentials.

  • Typically twelve to twenty-four months in a healthy organisation, assuming you hit target consistently and the company is growing enough to open AE seats.

  • No confirmed launch date for the dedicated SDR curriculum. The discovery and qualification training inside the flagship programme transfers directly, and the interview preparation guide covers SDR assessment days.
