Pathway 07 / Specialist pathway

The Fractional Sales Director Pathway

Senior sales leadership delivered part-time across several businesses. It sits at the commercial end of a remote sales career.

Specialist pathway

Provides senior sales leadership to several businesses at once on a retained, part-time basis. This page is the full UK career guide for the role: pay, responsibilities, skills, progression and who is hiring. Training for this seat currently runs through the flagship closing programme, and PrimeClosers places candidates into these roles today.

Typical base
£2,000–£6,000 per client per month on retainer
Commission
Often a performance element of 1–3% of incremental revenue
Realistic OTE
£80,000–£200,000 across a portfolio of three to five clients
Remote outlook
Almost entirely remote, with occasional onsite strategy days.

Figures are observed UK market ranges, not a promise of earnings. Individual results vary with experience, offer, territory and effort.

Overview

A fractional sales director gives small and mid-sized businesses the sales leadership they need but cannot justify hiring full-time. Two or three days a month per client, on retainer, across several clients at once. It is the highest-leverage seat in remote sales and the one that requires the most real-world evidence behind it.

01

What a fractional sales director does

Diagnose why a business is not hitting its number. Build or fix the sales process. Write the scripts and the comp plan. Hire and coach the team. Install reporting the founder can actually read. Then step back to a review cadence.

You are not doing the selling. You are making the selling work without you in the room.

02

The commercial model

Typically a monthly retainer per client covering a defined number of days, sometimes with a performance element tied to revenue growth. Three to five clients is a common book.

The attraction is obvious: leadership-level income without single-employer risk. The requirement is just as obvious. You need results you can point to.

03

What the HTCA pathway will cover

This is the last curriculum we will build, and deliberately so. When it is written it will cover diagnosing a broken sales function, building process from scratch, retainer pricing and scoping, positioning and winning fractional clients, onboarding a client business, and reporting that keeps a retainer renewed.

This pathway will assume prior leadership experience. It is not an entry point.

04

Where to start today

There is no shortcut here. The route runs through closing, then leadership, then fractional. If you are at the start of that, begin with the flagship programme; if you are mid-way, the leadership pathway is the closer fit.

HTCA teaches and certifies against a published standard. PrimeClosers connects experienced operators with UK businesses that need that standard installed. It is the same loop, just at the senior end of it.

Day to day

What the role actually involves

  • Audit an existing sales function and diagnose what is actually broken.
  • Build or rebuild the sales process, playbook and CRM structure.
  • Recruit and onboard the client's first or next sales hires.
  • Install forecasting and reporting the founder can trust.
  • Coach the client's existing reps to a standard.
  • Exit cleanly by handing over to a permanent leader.
Capability

The skills that decide who gets hired

  • Rapid diagnosis of an unfamiliar sales function
  • Commercial consulting and stakeholder management with founders
  • Playbook and systems design
  • Recruitment and capability assessment
  • Running your own business: contracts, pricing, positioning
  • Knowing when to hand over rather than entrench
Fit

Who this seat suits, and who it does not

Ideal for
  • Experienced sales directors who want portfolio work over a single employer
  • Leaders who prefer building systems to managing day to day
  • People who can sell their own services credibly
Less suited to
  • Anyone without prior sales leadership experience. This is the senior end of the ladder
  • People who want employment security and a single payroll
Progression

Where the role leads next

  1. 01First retained clientUsually a warm relationship, part-time hours.
  2. 02Portfolio of three to fiveSystemised delivery and standard engagement shape.
  3. 03Productised consultancyAssociates delivering under your methodology.

Demand

Industries hiring for this seat

  • Scale-ups without a full-time sales leader
  • Founder-led agencies and consultancies
  • Coaching and education businesses past first hires
  • Professional services firms building a commercial function
  • Private-equity-backed portfolio companies
Why employers value it
  • A fractional director gives a founder senior expertise at a fraction of a £120k+ salary.
  • Bringing in outside pattern recognition avoids months of avoidable trial and error.
  • Engagements are time-boxed, which suits companies between growth stages.
Training

How HTCA prepares you for this role

This pathway sits at the senior end of the academy and assumes an existing leadership track record. HTCA's contribution is the standard: a published rubric and certification you can install as your client's hiring bar.

A dedicated fractional curriculum covering engagement design, pricing, diagnostics and handover is planned.

01

Use the HTCA rubric as your client's hiring standard

02

Introduce clients to certified talent via PrimeClosers

Next stage: PrimeClosers
PrimeClosers, the UK remote sales placement network

Senior remote sales operators come through the same network.

At this level HTCA's role is smaller: certify the standard. PrimeClosers connects experienced operators with UK businesses that need sales leadership, full-time or otherwise.

After training you create a PrimeClosers profile, build a professional reputation employers can see, apply for live roles and keep developing your career with support behind you. It is the fourth step of the same pathway, not a separate product.

01

UK businesses increasingly buy leadership fractionally.

02

PrimeClosers knows which ones are looking.

03

Certification underpins the standard you install.

Q&A

Common questions.

  • Retainers vary widely by scope and sector. The model is generally a fixed monthly fee for a set number of days, sometimes with a performance component. Rates depend entirely on the results you can evidence.

  • Realistically, several years of sales leadership with documented results. Clients are buying judgement, not enthusiasm.

  • Close, but fractional work is embedded and ongoing. You own the outcome inside the business, rather than delivering a report and leaving.

  • This is the furthest out of the seven curricula. In the meantime fractional directors use the HTCA rubric as a hiring bar and introduce clients to certified talent through PrimeClosers.
